Shell Pearls Explained: Materials and Jewellery Care
Share
Shell pearls are imitation pearls made to give a pearl-like appearance. They should not be confused with natural or cultured pearls grown in mollusks. When choosing LUNOYA jewellery, read the pearl material, metal components and finish for the specific style you want.
What does shell pearl mean?
GIA describes shell pearl imitations as shell beads, often with an artificial coating that creates a pearl-like surface. Its Shell Pearl as a Pearl Imitation article explains the distinction. GIA also explains that cultured pearls are real pearls, while imitation pearls can use materials such as shell or composites.
These are general material references, not laboratory reports on LUNOYA products. A product described as shell pearl is offered for its pearl-inspired look. Size and colour names alone do not establish pearl origin, quality grade or coating composition.

- Pearl diameter: a 12 mm pearl measurement is not the total length or weight of the earring.
- Metal components: the setting, ear post and backing may be different components. Ask about any part that matters to you.
- Gold-Tone and Silver-Tone: these describe the finish colour; they do not mean solid gold or sterling silver.
Our everyday care guidance
For the shell pearl styles linked below, we recommend keeping the jewellery dry, avoiding direct contact with perfume, lotion and household chemicals, and wiping it gently after wear. Store pieces separately in a soft pouch to reduce rubbing. Remove them before swimming or showering; this guide does not promise waterproof or tarnish-proof performance.
If a piece needs more than a gentle wipe, contact us about that specific style before using a cleaner. Do not assume a cleaning method for plain metal jewellery is suitable for its pearl-like surface or decorative details.
